People in Christchurch have been hopping on their bikes and staying there.
The number of cyclists in the city has increased 10 per cent from 2007, according to the latest figures from Christchurch City Council
"People seem to have got on their bikes, discovered they like it, and stayed there," says Michael Ferigo, Cycling and Pedestrian Transport planner. "Petrol price increases have been an influence and there has been an increase in cycling nationally."
"It's positive to see cyclists getting back out on the roads and enjoying our cycleways and paths," says Terry Howes, the Council Asset and Network Planning manager.
Recent intersection counts reveal the Armagh Street entrance to Hagley Park as the busiest intersection in Christchurch by far, with 634 cyclists counted in a single morning from 7:30 to 9am.
Most of the growth has been in the north and west, with the south and east steady.
