About this ride
- The North Railway to City cycle path is one of Christchurch's best off-road cycling facilities.
- Running alongside the northern railway from Kilmarnock St, Riccarton to Tuckers Rd, Northcote, the track is separated away from traffic, making it a safe and easy track for those travelling to and from school or work.
- Leaving from the central city, the cycle path takes cyclists via Hagley Park, through to popular areas such as Fendalton, Papanui and Northcote.
- Priority is given to cyclists at busy intersections along the way, as sensors (cuts in the tarmac) activate traffic signals allowing cyclists to maintain momentum.
- The North Railway cycle path is just over 5 kilometres and is a shared use path, requiring cyclists to give way to pedestrians. Cyclists should ‘ding' their bell or call to politely warn of their approach and pedestrians should avoid blocking the pathway and keep dogs on a short leash.
- Please note the cycle path changes to the other side of the railway line at a few spots, such as Northcote Rd. Travel on Restrell St (running behind the old railway station) between Langons and Harewood Roads. When heading south at Harewood Rd crossing, switch over to the east side of St James Park, where the cycle path continues.
