Avon River Link

 

About this ride

Follow the Avon River and ride downriver past the estuary to the coast.

  • Start at the bridge in Victoria Square
  • Follow the path from the bridge to Colombo Street
  • Cross onto Oxford Terrace
  • Dismount to cross if necessary
  • Follow Oxford Terrace
  • Use the cycle crossing points if necessary (at Manchester Street and Madras Street)
  • Turn left and take the path a short distance to the Madras Street and Kilmore Street lights.
  • Cross Kilmore Street and pick up the path that runs down the left bank of the river to Cambridge Terrace
  • Cross Barbadoes Street and follow the path around into Cambridge Terrace
  • Follow Cambridge Terrace and at the end pick up the path on the right that runs between Fitzgerald Avenue and the Avon river
  • Just before reaching the Avon bridge, use the curb cutdown and the refuge area in the middle of Fitzgerald Avenue to cross over into River Road beside the river
  • Follow River Road and take a right turn 300m after the North Avon Road intersection
  • Follow the path over the river footbridge
  • Turn left and follow the riverside path to Gayhurst Street and Gloucester Street Bridge
  • Join Avonside Drive a few metres before the lights
  • Follow Avonside Road 500 metres before picking up the river side path again
  • Continue downriver on the path to the rowing sheds at Porrit Park
  • Follow the path through the car park area
  • Cross the bridge and follow the riverside again
  • Follow the river
  • Take care at the Avondale Road crossing
  • At the Anzac Drive bridge use the underpass or the "cloverleaf" cycle path feature to get to the left hand side of the river
  • Follow the riverside path to the Pages Road roundabout
  • Continue on the true right of the river
  • Take care at the crossings at the Wainoni Road and Pages Road bridge
  • At this stage a mountain bike may be more suitable, but most type of bikes should be fine
  • Either continue on true right using riverside paths on Bexley Road to Bridge Street where a short road section allows you to rejoin Pages Road
  • Or cross the pedestrian section of Pages Road Bridge to cross to the true left of the river
  • Follow either Owles Terrace or the informal track on the river bank to the boat ramp
  • Pick up the sealed path leading down river
  • Where the sealed path turns away from the river follow the gravel path on the river bank
  • Follow the path down river
  • Take care at the sharp corner after the end of Evans Street
  • Follow the track to Bridge Street
  • At Bridge Street, cross and follow the good quality gravel path through Bridge Reserve and South New Brighton Park
  • Pick up the track on other side of the sealed access road to the wharf
  • Follow path and boardwalk to the estuary until Ebbtide Street
  • Near the end of Ebbtide Street follow Caspian Street to the dunes
  • Dismount and walk out to the beach at South Shore
